The SFSG Journals, Volume One

A couple of weeks ago, while searching for my school scrapbook, MTM also discovered a journal I kept in the fall of 1997 (three years before meeting her, when I was SciFi Single Guy - or SFSG - living in Montreal). As I am still in a weird place with my blogging right now (in other words, struggling to find post ideas), I thought I'd try posting some of it.

Originally, I was going to transcribe it to text, but after confirming with MTM that my handwriting is (relatively) legible, I decided to scan the pages instead. I have redacted some identifying elements, but nothing too significant. What follows are the first five pages.

Click each image to open in a new window. In most browsers, if you click the image (in a new window) it will increase the view to full size, which is easiest to read.

So what did you think? Did you enjoy this glimpse into my boring pathetic lonely past? Do you want to read more? Is the handwriting too difficult to read, or does it lend some authenticity to the post? Your feedback in the comments will determine whether this is a one-off, or if I will post more.

Munchkin's Contest will be open for entries until 11.59pm EST tonight. Please send in your costumes; she's really enjoying seeing all of them.

I found it interesting. It is storytelling and yet not too because you are sitting writing what you see, what you think what you feel. Obviously journaling but I enjoyed reading it.

I used to keep a journal (on my computer) about 4 years before I met my husband. I wish I still had it because it would interesting to read now. The guy I was dating at the time was my first love, he was 9 years older and we lived 2 hours apart. It would be interesting to see what I thought then of my life (student, live in nanny) becasue while I remember the time our perspective shifts when we have the view from years past.

How do you feel about what you wrote then? What's your perspective on those days from where you sit now?

I hope you'll share more. I enjoyed reachign into the mind of SFSG.

I love seeing someone's handwriting. Yours is totally legible. I loved this post.

The one thing that struck me was how similar your writer's voice was then to how you are now. It's just so clearly You writing that, but in a different time and place. I like that.

I'd love to read more if you're willing to post it, it's interesting!

Shit! I forgot to enter Munchkin's contest! Damn. Sorry, Munchkin. I think the H1N1 ate my brain.

I like that your voice on paper is very close to your voice online. Also, I am totally impressed with your penmanship. I can hardly read Dave's chicken scratch.

"It would kill me to meet someone like me."

Wow. I think I was the opposite at that age (we're about the same age, right?)... all I wanted was to meet someone a lot *like* me.

What an amazing thing to share!! I really liked this. And I loved that it was handwritten. It came across as so much more personal.

Your journals were/are way more eloquent than mine, which consisted of pages upon pages of me whining about not having a girlfriend.

I was emo before emo was cool, I guess.
